Dear Boys and Girls,
Welcome to the fourth grade! I am so excited to have you in my class this year. I thought you might be wondering a bit about me too. I was born in Michigan and moved to Virginia when I was six. Growing up, I lived right near our state's capital. Do you know where that is? I also loved to do gymnastics, dance with my sisters, and play outdoors. Later, I went to James Madison University right near the Appalachian Mountains. After teaching third grade for a few years, I went back to school to George Mason University to earn my Masters degree in Education. You'll be learning about both of those founding fathers (Mason and Madison) this year in Virginia History. I've taught fourth grade now for four years and have been teaching in Prince William County for fifteen years. As a former student said, "That's longer than I've been alive!"
When I'm not teaching, there are many things that I enjoy doing in my spare time. I love animals and the outdoors. I enjoy traveling and visiting family and friends all over Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. This summer, I also spent a lot of time swimming, camping, and hiking with my husband and son, Tyler. In the winter, I love to ski and recently tried snowboarding for the first time, which was fun, but rather painful! I am also constantly reading all different kinds of books. Speaking of reading, we will be exploring many good books this year. I can’t wait to hear your opinions and thoughts as we talk about the characters you will be meeting. At the beginning of fourth grade you will also be learning about natural resources and the five regions of Virginia. We will review a lot of math concepts too, like place value, rounding, products, and quotients. You can be ready for fourth grade by practicing your basic math facts at home.
This year, we have much to learn so I know you will come to school prepared. Fourth graders need to be organized, responsible, and put forth a lot of effort. We will work on these concepts together so we can have a great year in Room #19!
Your teacher,
Mrs. Barr
